Ariegeois

Ariegeois

The Ariegeois is a medium-sized hound dog that originated in France where it was used primarily to hunt deer and wild boar. Ariegeois dogs have been in existence in France since about 1912. They are thought to have developed from the crossing of Grand Gascon Saintongeois Hounds, Grand Bleu de Gascogne Hounds and various other Briquet-type dogs. The breed quickly became popular for its abilities as coursers and to drive game back to hunters. Today, they are still successful hunting dogs that are commonly used to hunt deer, boar and hares. Although they are a popular breed in Southern France, they are rarely seen outside of this region. Ariege Hounds are recognized by the Federation Cynologique Internationale, Kennel Club USA and the United Kennel Club.

As stated above, the Ariegois is a medium-sized dog that typically weighs anywhere from 35 to 45 pounds. However, some of these dogs have been known to weigh as much as 65 pounds fully grown. These are short-haired hounds that can be tri-colored or white with black patches and spots. They have long tails, a lean body and long, droopy ears.

Personality

Known also as Ariege Hounds, these are extremely hard-working and affectionate dogs that make great hunters, companions or faithful family pets. This is an enthusiastic breed of dog that is happiest when it is tracking game. Nevertheless, it is also very gentle and affectionate with its human family members. As such, it makes a terrific pet for families with children. Ariegois also get along quite well with other dogs. Ariege Hounds are friendly and energetic dogs that make excellent hunting dogs, companions or family pets. However, if you choose to bring one of these dogs home, you will want to make sure that you have a large yard. Additionally, be sure to start obedience training at an early age if you choose an Ariegeois.
