Hellenic Hound

Hellenic Hound

The Hellenic Hound is a medium-sized dog that holds its roots in Southern Greece where it was originally developed for tracking and chasing hares. It is known by several different names including the Hellenic Hound, Greek Harehound, Greek Hound and the Hellenikos Ichnilatis. It is believed that Hellenic Hounds may have been in existence since the 10th century and are descendants of ancient Laconikoi Kynes dogs of Southern Greece. Throughout its history, Hellenic Hounds were commonly used for scenting and tracking such small game as raccoons, foxes and rabbits. Today, the dogs are still popular as hunting dogs; however, they are terrific companions as well.

Hallenic Hounds typically weigh anywhere between 38 and 44 pounds fully grown. This is a short-haired breed that is black with tan, red or orange markings. Some Hallenic Hounds may have a white spot on the chest. They have long floppy ears, dark eyes, a long tail and a muscular body.

Personality

Hellenic Hounds were developed in Greece centuries ago to hunt and chase hares. While these dogs can be quite playful and affectionate, they are also very active and loud. As such, if you choose to add one of these dogs to your family, you will want to make sure that you begin obedience training at an early age. This is a very intelligent dog that is quite easy to train. It is also extremely affectionate and playful, which makes it a great pet for people who have older children. However, since they are a hunting breed, they may not interact well with small household pets such as cats, rabbits and rodents.
