Laika dogs have their origins in the aboriginal dogs of Hanty and Mansi. Russian hunters found themselves attracted to these dogs because of their outstanding endurance and hunting ability. Laikas were soon purposely bred and separated into regions or classes. Laikas of certain regions were not bred with those found in other regions. Although the dog is a fabulous hunter, it has not gained popularity outside of Russia. These dogs continue to be used as hunting dogs in that country, but the breed is not typically kept as a family pet. Laikas of any class are not recognized by the AKC.

A bored Laika will become destructive, finding ways to entertain itself. Members of this breed can get along with other animals in the house, but Laikas must be socialized with other animals early on if this is an expectation.

Appearance
Laika dogs do not require much grooming. Daily brushings will remove dirt and debris from the coat. The dog only needs bathed when it is dirty. As with any breed, ear cleanings, toenail clippings and teeth brushing is essential. Beginning a grooming regime when the Laika is a puppy will get it used to the process.

Laika Common Health Conditions
There are no health issues that are common to the Laika. It is said that these are some of the healthiest dogs in the world. Like any breed of dog, common ailments such as ear infections, upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal upsets occur. Owners should expect to take their dog to the vet at least once each year for a wellness exam and vaccinations.
