Laika

Laika

Laika dogs have their origins in the aboriginal dogs of Hanty and Mansi. Russian hunters found themselves attracted to these dogs because of their outstanding endurance and hunting ability. Laikas were soon purposely bred and separated into regions or classes. Laikas of certain regions were not bred with those found in other regions. Although the dog is a fabulous hunter, it has not gained popularity outside of Russia. These dogs continue to be used as hunting dogs in that country, but the breed is not typically kept as a family pet. Laikas of any class are not recognized by the AKC.

Laikas are a medium dog, standing no higher than 20 inches at the withers. The bodies of these dogs are both elongated and square. Ears of the breed are small and set fairly far apart. There is an obvious ruff of hair around the neck and shoulders. Laikas of some regions tend to be larger or smaller than others, but all members of this breed are easily recognized as belonging to a specific type of dog.

Personality

These dogs tend to be one-family animals. Laikas are wary of strangers. Whether or not strangers are accepted depends on the specific dog. The breed makes an excellent guard dog, bonding strongly to its human family. It is not unusual for a member of this breed to be overly protective of their family. Because this breed was created for hunting, it must have a job to do. A Laika that is left to its own devices will find itself in trouble. A bored Laika will become destructive, finding ways to entertain itself. Members of this breed can get along with other animals in the house, but Laikas must be socialized with other animals early on if this is an expectation.
