Petit Gascon Saintongeois

Petit Gascon Saintongeois

The Petit Gascon Saintongeois belongs to the hounding breeding group, with talents as a hunting dog and watch dog. It originated in France, known for its keen hunting skills with small game such as hare. It has all the characteristics of the Grand Gascon, just smaller. That's because the smallest puppies in the litters of the Grand breed were selected to create the Petit breed. Developed in the first part of the 20th century, this dog has speed, agility, bravery and excellent scenting abilities on its side.

The Petit Gascon Saintongeois grows to between 18 and 22 inches tall, with a weight of between 53 and 55 lbs. This medium sized, well-proportioned hound features a white and black coat, mostly white with speckles of black. The back of the thigh bears a mahogany marking, which is used to identity this rare breed. This dog has a domed skull, black nose, oval-shaped eyes, thin ears, deep and wide chest, muscular shoulders and short yet coarse coat that protects it from the cold.

Personality

Tenacity, friendliness, intelligence and attentiveness are all character traits of this breed. Its steady temperament makes it a very good family pet, as it's particularly gentle with children. This smart dog is amiable and easy to train with positive reinforcement. It learns fast but does not like strangers at first and will protect its family. Because it's used to pack hunting, the Petit Gascon Saintongeois gets along with other dogs. It needs lots of physical exercise and does best in a home with a large backyard and plenty of opportunities for running about.
