Smooth Collie

Smooth Collie

Descended from generations of herding dogs, the Collie is believed to be native to Scotland. They were originally utilized for water rescue, herding, guiding and guarding. Today, the rough Collie is more popular than the smooth Collie in the United States. The opposite is true in Great Britain, where the smooth Collie is more popular. The only difference between the two is that the Smooth Collie doesn't have the long coat that the Rough Collie has. They make great guide dogs for the blind. They are also known for their search and rescue skills, agility, obedience, acting and watch dog capabilities.

Males can grow to a height of 24 to 26 inches and females to 22 to 24 inches. Males can weight between 60 and 75 pounds, while females weigh between 50 and 65 pounds. Sooth Collies have almond eyes, a rounded muzzle, long neck, straight legs, long tail and erect ears.

Personality

This intelligent dog is sensitive, friendly, calm, mild-mannered, loyal and easy to train. It makes a great companion for kids and even other dogs. They do need to be trained not to display herding behaviors, which they will do if not taught otherwise. They make faithful and playful pets, always mindful of being protective to the family. This breed is energetic when outside and loves to get exercise. They aren't vicious but will be wary of strangers, so be sure to socialize them early on. They can be willful if not obedience trained.
