Domestic Medium Hair

If it were compared to a dog, the domestic medium hair cat would be called a mutt. Generations of mixed breeding has occurred over the years among different types of cats, resulting in the domestic medium hair. As far as historians are concerned, the first cats arrived in the United States with the Pilgrims. Both purposeful and uncontrolled mixed breeding resulted in these great cats. The domestic mediumhair is most closely related to the domestic shorthair. Surprisingly, the breed is not as closely related to the domestic longhair. Purebred cats with medium hair coats include Siberians, ragdolls, American bobtails, minskins, Turkish angoras, Manx, and ragamuffins. All of these breeds have the same double coat as the domestic mediumhair.

Some Domestic medium hair cats are long and lean, but some of them could be short and stocky. This breed vary widely in build. The build of the kitten determines the build of the adult. Typically, these cats weigh anywhere between 11 and 22 pounds as adults. The weight of the domestic medium hair is determined by the breeds of cat in its ancestral gene pool. Personality: Because domestic medium hairs have no specific breeding pattern and have not been bred for temperament, their personalities vary widely. Like dogs, the way that these cats are raised by humans is a major factor in the personalities they develop. When raised with a gentle hand, domestic medium hairs make good household pets. Socialized domestic medium hairs get along well with children and other pets.

If there is anything all domestic medium hairs have in common, it is a double coat. These cats need to be groomed at least once weekly to prevent hairballs and matted fur. When you begin a grooming regimen with your kitten, it grows to enjoy, or at least tolerate, frequent brushings. A wire-tooth comb works well for the type of fur found on this breed.

Common Health Conditions in Domestic Medium Hairs

The health issues that are common to the domestic medium hair are those that are common to all cat breeds. Domestic medium hairs are prone to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a heart disease that greatly shortens the life of cats. Additionally, these cats may be prone to kidney issues, arthritis as they age, upper respiratory infections and asthma. Because of their mixed ancestry, it is difficult to pinpoint a health issue specific to the breed.
