American Hairless Terrier

The American Hairless Terrier is a small breed of dog that was developed in the United States primarily as lovable companions. Also simply known as the AHT, this sweet little dog is a fairly new breed and is slowly gaining popularity as one of the best "hypo-allergenic" dog breeds available today. American Hairless Terriers were discovered in 1972 when a hairless female puppy was born to a purebred Rat Terrier owned by Edwin and Willie Scott of Louisiana. The Scotts loved the look of the little hairless baby, and they named her Josephine. Over the years, Josephine produced three more hairless pups, which became the foundation for the Scotts' breeding program. With the help of their veterinarian, the Scotts began trying to stabilize the breed. For a brief period, the dogs were classified as a variety of the Rat Terrier. However, they are now recognized as a breed of their own. In fact, the breed is recognized by many dog clubs including the American Hairless Terrier Club of America, the American Hairless Terrier Association and the United Kennel Club, among others.

The American Hairless Terrier is small-sized dog breed, well-muscled terrier. American Hairless Terriers have strong necks and shoulders and deep chests. They have medium-sized ears that point forward and pointy, strong muzzles. They can either be completely hairless or have a very short, fuzzy hair. While their coat is easily cared for, they need to be protected from sunburn and/or cold climates. This small hairless dog averages about five to 10 pounds fully grown. Nevertheless, it is not uncommon for some American Hairless Terriers to weigh as much as 15 to 25 pounds as adults. While there have been cases when a coated pup is born to an AHT, these cases are a bit rare. Their skin is typically pink or white with spots that can be gray, red, gold, brown or black. Brindle, black and tan, and tri-colors are all acceptable colors for American Hairless Terriers as well. Personality: American Hairless Terriers are lively, energetic and affectionate. They are very good with children, especially if they were raised with them. They are alert and inquisitive, as well as playful. They are intelligent so mental stimulation is just as important to them as physical exercise. They are usually friendly towards other dogs and strangers, but can be territorial. They also need consistent training. Like most other terrier breeds, the American Hairless Terrier is an extremely energetic dog that loves to run and play. This is also a very affectionate dog that is perfectly happy cuddling on the lap of its owner. While the AHT is a smart dog, due to its active disposition, it is best to begin training as early as possible.

Medium Maintenance

The American Hairless Terrier requires little grooming other than an occasional bathing when necessary. When bathing your pet, you should also check its ears and gently wipe away any excess wax with the tip of a moist rag. Finally, if your dog's nails grow too long, you can clip the tips with a guillotine-type nail clipper. If you are looking for a lively little dog that is also extremely affectionate, an American Hairless Terrier may be the breed for you! These are small intelligent dogs that love spending time with their human families. Furthermore, since they are hairless, they are a great choice for people with allergies.
