Hungarian Greyhound

Hungarian Greyhounds are medium-sized dogs that originated in Hungary where they were mainly used for hunting and long-distance racing. They are known by several different names including the Hungarian Greyhound, Hungarian Agar, Hungarian Gazehound, Hungarian Sighthound and the Magyar Agar. The Hungarian Greyhound has been around since the 10th century when they were developed by the Magyar people in Hungary to be excellent sighthounds. While many people think that Hungarian Greyhounds are descendants of Greyhounds, this is not so. They are actually relatives of various other scenthound breeds. All through history, Hungarian Greyhounds have been used mainly for tracking and retrieving such game as rabbits, foxes and deer. However, they were also commonly used for racing, lure coursing, as watch dogs and even family pets. Today, they continue to excel as hunting and coursing dogs; however, they are quite rare outside of Hungary.

Hungarian Greyhounds are medium-sized dogs that can weigh anywhere between 49 and 68 pounds as adults. These are tall and lean dogs that have short hair, which can come in a variety of colors including most any solid color with white markings, brindle, and white or cream with patches of such colors as brown, black, orange and grey. They are most known for their graceful necks, elegant heads, small ears and long tails. Personality: Hungarian Greyhounds are great with children but may not behave well around small household pets such as cats, rabbits and rodents. Additionally, since Hungarian Greyhounds can run very fast, if you choose to add one of them to your home, you will want to be sure to provide it with a secured yard. While originally bred for hunting purposes, today many of these dogs are also used for lure coursing, as companions or as family pets. If you choose to add one of these dogs to your family, you will want to make sure that you provide it with a secure, large yard where it can run and play.
