Norrbottenspets

The rare Norrbottenspets originated in the Norrbotten province of Sweden. The breed is likely descended from the ancient hunting dogs that were used in the Nordic region. As with many dog breeds, the ravages of World War II took a toll on the Norrbottenspets and rendered the breed close to extinction. The few remaining specimens thrived as companion pets on Sweden’s homesteads and farmsteads. By the late 1960s, efforts were made to revitalize the Norrbottenspets and establish a new breed standard for registration with the Swedish Kennel Club. The Norrbottenspets continues to assist on hunting trails and to offer its devoted companionship.

The Norrbottenspets, or Nordic Spitz, is an ancient Spitz-type dog. They have wedge-shaped heads with long pointy muzzles and triangular and erect ears. Their furry tails curl over their backs. Their bodies are compact and athletic. Their coats are double and short, and come in a variety of colors. Grooming this breed is a breeze, they need to be brushed and bathed as needed. Personality: The Norrbottenspet is a lively, energetic and friendly dog. Norrbots are very affectionate towards their owners and friendly with children. They need active owners who can take them out for a daily long run, jog or vigorous game. If they don't get enough exercise they become bored and destructive. They are friendly toward other dogs and good with most other pets, as long as they are not too small.

Low Maintenance

The Norrbottenspets requires minimal grooming to maintain its thick coat. Brushing the coat through once a week pulls out the dead hair to maintain its healthy luster and minimize the accumulation of shed hair in the home. During the heavy shedding season, owners may opt to perform this task more frequently. Brushing the Norrbottenspets teeth every other day will ensure optimal oral and overall health.
