Serbian Hound

The Balkan hound, now known as the Serbian hound, is a scent hound from the Balkans. The first record of a Balkan hound originates from the 11th century. The first standard for the Serbian hound was written in 1924, and the dog's name was officially changed in 1996. The breed is quite common in its native land but rare in other parts of the world.

The Serbian hound is a medium to large breed of dog; males are larger than females. Like other scent hounds, the dog is well-muscled and lean. A Serbian hound should be neither too large nor too small. A layer of muscle over the ribs is desirable; pads of fat are not. Personality: The Serbian hound is a happy-go-lucky breed with a lively temperament. The dog is fiercely loyal to its family and good with children. Whether the dog is great with other pets in the household depends on the specific dog. The Serbian hound is highly trainable, but training can prove to be a challenge. The breed tends to be independent, not sure if it cares to please its owner or not. Proper socialization with people and animals is an important part of raising this dog.
