Shih-Poo

Shih-Poohs have been emerging over the last 20 years or so, as more and more breeders are crossing average Shih Tzus and Poodles for a blend that features both of the best traits from each parent breed. As of yet, this small domestic dog is not officially recognized by the AKC, UKC or CKC.

The Shih-Poo grows to a height of eight to 15 inches at the shoulder, weighing seven to 20 pounds. This dog can either sport a curly coat like that of a Poodle or a long, straight coat like that of a Shih Tzu. His face is alert, his body is sturdy for his size and his coat can come in a variety of colors. Personality: Shih-poos are wonderful with older children who have been taught to handle it in a careful manner. Small active kids such as toddlers can be too rough and may hurt your dog. Always supervise their interaction. These dogs are friendly, affectionate and love to play. They are small but they can display stubborn tendencies and you'll need to know how to properly motivate them such as through treats. They love to sit with their owners and get all the love and attention they can. They are fairly courageous and brave for their small stature and even make good watchdogs. They tend to yap a lot, so if you're looking for a quiet dog, this is not the breed for you.

Common Health Conditions in Shih-Poos

Shih-poos are prone to the health problems that Shih Tzus and Toy Poodles have but this is no guarantee. The very nature of the crossbreed could lower their risk of getting certain inherited diseases. Make sure your breeder provides full health documentation so you are aware of any potential health concerns.
