Sloughi

Although the exact dates of origin are unknown, this breed is quite old. Some believe the breed dates as far back as the 13th century, as it was mentioned in writings by famed Moroccan author Al Mansur. It originally came from the regions of Morocco, Libya, Tunisia and Algeria. Also referred to as the Arabian Sighthound, it is more accurately known locally as the Sloughi Moghrebi. This dog was greatly prized by chiefs and kings who were the only people allowed to keep them.

Males grow to a height of between 26 and 28 inches, while females grow to between 24 and 26 inches. Males weigh between 55 and 65 pounds, while females weight between 35 and 50 pounds. The Sloughi has a square and leggy build, featuring a straight topline, bony croup, solid coat color of red, sand or black, gentle facial expression, accommodating gait, with not as much back flexion as the Greyhound, of which it resembles. It is a medium sized dog with a long, streamlined appearance. Personality: The Sloughi is gentle, strong, affectionate and loyal to its owners. They're also smart and independent with a natural curiosity about them. Quiet and relatively calm outdoors, Sloughis enjoy lounging around on blankets, especially when lying on their backs. They regard strangers with caution but they will enthusiastically greet anyone they recognize. They get along with other dogs and children if they are raised alongside them. Avoid letting your Sloughi outside loose with a smaller animal or it will give chase, thanks to its natural hunting instincts. It's imperative that you as the owner establish the role of pack leader very early on to curb behavior issues.
