The toy Manchester terrier was developed during the late 1800s to accommodate the popularity of smaller dogs. The dog was developed in Manchester, England by crossing the original Manchester terrier, which had been created as a ratter, with other small breeds, such as the Italian greyhound. In 1886, the American Kennel Club recognized the toy Manchester terrier as a member of the toy group.
