Medium sized dogs are a great choice if you are looking for a pet that will be perfect for your family. There are many different types of medium dog breeds, and they make fantastic companions for people of all ages. While there are dozens of them to choose from, listed below are the top  medium dog breeds today.

Long-Haired Medium Sized Dogs

Golden Retrievers – They are sporting dogs that are often used by hunters to retrieve waterfowl. However, they are also used as therapy, search and rescue, drug detection, and guide dogs. They weigh between 60 and 75 pounds and are golden-colored.

Rough-Coated Collies – The Rough-Coated Collie is a herding breed that originates from both England and Scotland. These gentle dogs make great family pets and have often been used to herd sheep and cattle. They weigh between 40 and 55 pounds and can be tri-colored, parti-colored or sable.

Australian Shepherd – The Australian Shepherd  is another herding breed that originated in the U.S. and has been used to herd cattle and sheep. However, they have also been used as therapy, search and rescue, disaster, and detection dogs. They range in weight from 30 to 65 pounds and can be blue or red merle.

Short-Haired Medium Sized Dogs

Labrador Retrievers  – Just like Goldens, Labradors  are often used to retrieve waterfowl. However, they too have been used as therapy, search and rescue, drug detection, and guide dogs. These sporting dogs weigh 50 to 80 pounds and can be yellow, cream, black or chocolate.

Boxer This dog breed  comes from Germany and was originally used to run down game such as bison and wild boar and hold it down until the hunter arrived. These are classified as working dogs and can weigh anywhere from 55 to 70 pounds. Allowable colors include brindle and fawn.

German Shorthaired Pointer  – It is a sporting breed that is most commonly used by hunters to point out game. These dogs can vary in weight from 45 to 70 pounds and the most common colors include liver and white, liver roan, black and white, brown, and brown and white.

American Foxhounds  – Cousins to the English Foxhounds, Foxhounds are classified in the Hound group and are most often used by hunter to track game. They can weigh anywhere from 44 to 75 pounds and allowable colors include tri-colored, tan, red, blue, white, and white and cream.
