Supplementing your dog’s food with olive oil is extremely beneficial. Olive oil is rich in a nutrient known as monosaturated fat. Being rich in monosaturated fats provides olive oil with the ability to reduce the effects of diabetes, for example. Olive oil has also been found to reduce the risk of cancer.

Olive oil contains a large number of antioxidants which assist in defending the immune system and increasing immunity. What does this mean? Basically, olive oil helps your dog fight illness and disease!

In addition to preventing illness and reducing the effects of illness, olive oil has also been found to prevent aging in dogs. How? Olive oil reduces cognitive decline. What does this mean? Basically, your dog’s mind is kept fresh by supplementing his food with olive oil. Excellent!

Olive Oil and Dogs: The Amount

How much olive oil should you add to your dog’s diet? As a general guideline, a dog weighing up to 20 pounds is given approximately ½ teaspoon. Dogs weighing approximately double this amount (50 lbs or so) should be eating 1 teaspoon per day. For dogs over 100 pounds, 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil can be given. It is crucial not to overfeed your dog olive oil, though; overfeeding olive oil can lead to diarrhea and vomiting.
