Light Sensitivity

An abnormal sensitivity of the dog or cat to light, or intolerance of light especially by the eyes. This symptom, also called ´Photophobia´, may have several causes, such as eye inflammation, lack of iris pigmentation, cornea damage, eye cataracts, conjunctivitis, toxicity, shock, respiratory infections, rabies, or various diseases. Light sensitivity in cats and dogs can cause pain in your pet and must be diagnosed by a veterinarian as soon as possible.

How to Recognize

Your pet may make its eyes small or close its eyes in the light, or try to avoid light altogether.

Causes

Light sensitivity may be caused by eye inflammation, lack of iris pigmentation, cornea damage, eye cataracts, conjunctivitis, toxicity, shock, respiratory infections, rabies, or various diseases.

Diagnosis

Bring your pet to the veterinarian if you think they may be sensitive to light.

Treatments

Treatment varies, and not all causes may have or require treatment. Your doctor may prescribe medication or recommend surgery.
