Muscle Wasting

A condition in which the muscle of a pet becomes thinner and weaker. Dogs and cats that experience muscle wasting are most often displaying symptoms of an underlying health condition. In fact, muscle wasting in pets can be indicative of many different diseases and issues. However, perhaps the most common reason that dogs and cats may experience muscle wasting include aging, thyroid disease and disseminated aspergillosis. Other causes are lime disease, myositis and degenerative myelopathy.

How to Recognize

Pets suffering from muscle wasting will gradually lose muscle tone, and their muscles may appear thin and weak.


Degenerative myelopathy, hypothyroidism, myositis, and Lyme disease and other tick-borne disease can cause muscle wasting.
