If the thyroid gland of the pet is large enough to feel when you put your fingers on the throat, then the gland is "palpable". Healthy thyroid glands in pets are barely palpable; however, in the case of a palpable thyroid gland, there is most likely an underlying health issue present. Abnormal thyroid glands can vary in size from pea-sized to golf ball-sized. Some of the most common issues that can cause a palpable thyroid gland in dogs and cats include thyroid adenoma, hyperplastic nodules, thyroiditis, thyroid cysts and thyroid carcinoma.
