Pawing at the Ears

Reaction of a pet itching in the ears, pay special attention if your pet begins pawing at the ears, it can mean several different things. The most common reasons dogs and cats may begin pawing at the ears are due to fleas, ticks or ear mites on the ears or in the ear canals. However, there are many other things that can cause pets to paw at their ears such as excessive wax accumulation, injuries on or in the ear, inner ear infections, skin allergies, aural hematomas and insect bites.

If your pet begins pawing at the ears, it can be a sign something is bothering him/her.

Causes

Your pet is most likely pawing at the ears due to an irritation caused by fleas, ticks, or ear mites on the ears or in the ear canals. Other causes include excessive wax accumulation, injuries on or in the ear, inner ear infections, skin allergies, aural hematomas, and insect bites.

Diagnosis

The veterinarian will inspect your pet\\\'s ear canal and may test a sample of your pet\\\'s ear discharge.

Treatments

In most cases, the veterinarian will clean out your pet\\\'s ears and prescribe a topical or oral medication.
