The Most Active Dog Breeds

Find below a listing of the most active dog breeds today:

Border Collies

Perhaps the all-time most active dogs today are Border Collies. Border Collies originally came from the U.K. where they were mainly kept to herd sheep and other livestock. These dogs have medium-length black and white hair, and they can weigh between 27 and 45 pounds. Not only do Border Collies have an abundance of energy, but they are great with kids and highly intelligent as well.

Jack Russell Terriers

Jack Russell Terriers run a close tie with Border Collies as some of the most energetic dog breeds today. Jack Russells are short-haired dogs that average about 14 to 18 pounds full grown. They originated in England where they were developed to kill vermin. All throughout history, Jack Russell Terriers have also been delightful pets that are perfect for active adults and children of all ages.

Yorkshire Terriers

If you are interested in finding small energetic dogs, why not consider a Yorkshire Terrier ? Yorkies, as they are fondly called, originated in England where they were often used to kill vermin. However, they quickly became popular as lovable companions as well. These little dogs average five to seven pounds fully grown and have long silky hair that requires daily brushing. Yorkies are not recommended for small children.

Siberian Huskies

Siberian Huskies are also highly active dogs that can keep up with even the most energetic kids. They have thick, short hair and average about 35 to 60 pounds when full grown. Siberians tend to mature rather slowly and remain “puppy-like” for several years. They love to run and play rough games; however, they may be a bit too hyperactive for toddlers.

Poodles (All Varieties)

Also among the most active dog breeds known today are Poodles. While Poodles originated in Germany, they were developed in France. These dogs come in three varieties: toy, miniature and standard. They can weigh anywhere from six to 70 pounds depending on the variety. All Poodles have wiry type hair that needs regular grooming, and all of them are quite rambunctious as well. Toy Poodles are not recommended for small kids.
