When breeders were trying to produce a new breed the experiment went wrong and the American Longhair was born. They were trying to produce an American Shorthair with a shiny coat and green eyes of a Persian. Instead, they got a lookalike of the Persian with a leaner body and shorter coat. In general, the American Longhair has the right proportions and balance.

The Main Coon is among the most popular cat breed, and it is said to be related to French cats sent to New England by Marie Antoinette. They are very big cats, weighing up to 18 pounds. The breed's coat is a bit shorter than many longhair coats and the flattened face and generally square, lean build have led to American Longhairs being likened to Domestic Longhairs.
