Central Asian Sheperd Dog

Central Asian Sheperd Dog

One of the unique things about the Central Asian Ovcharka is that they are nearly 4000 years old. There isn't a lot of information about their origins, but people believe they are from the Tibetan Mastiffs. They are a beautiful breed, and make for wonderful protective companions.

The Central Asian Shepherd Dog is a massive dog that square-proportioned and muscular. It has strong legs and is as long as it is tall. It has a broad head with no pronounced stop. The Central Asian Shepherd Dog's neck is thick and powerful and they have short, pendant ears. It has a short, dense coat that comes in two varieties: long and short. Both coat varieties don't require a lot of attention, but the CAS is a heavy shedder and should be brushed regularly to reduce shedding.

Personality

The CAS is affectionate and friendly towards its own family members. CAS are natural protectors and feel responsible for their families. They are also strong-willed and domineering and need strong leadership. They are good with children but shouldn't be left unsupervised playing with them. This dog breed needs plenty of exercise, preferably in the form of jogs and hikes, or at least long brisk walks. They are happiest when they have a guarding task and tend to dig and chew. They can get aggressive if they feel threatened.

This breed is calm, but they must be supervised around children as they could see them as a threat. They are wary of strangers and they do not hesitate when it comes to dominating other dogs. They can bark at night, which is a frustration for neighborhoods. Some people use them as a flock guardian. Others need to find companions for them as they are a social dog. They get along well with cats and other animals. If you choose to add another dog to the family, you need to make sure they are not a threat to the Central Asian Ovtcharka. Owners must be strong as a timid owner will not be able to handle them. They want to have an order in their pack and they need their owners to be a strong pack leader. They are considered a guard dog and do not perform well in small living conditions. If they are stuck in small areas and aren't given enough exercise, they can become bored. This can cause them to dig and chew at things around the house. If you are a person that loves to hike or jog, this is the right breed. They need a long walk each day to get the right exercise to be fit and healthy. They are quick and can move from laying down to sprinting within seconds.
