Danish Swedish Farmdog

Danish Swedish Farmdog

The Danish-Swedish Farmdog is a small dog breed that was developed in Sweden and Denmark where it was mainly used to kill rats and guard livestock. It is known by many different names including the Danish-Swedish Farmdog (or Farm Dog), Scanian Terrier, Farm Dog, Dansk-Svensk Gardhund (or Gaardhund). The Danish-Swedish Farmdog has been in existence for centuries; however, it was not recognized as a purebred until 1987. While the breed resembles several terriers, it is actually more closely related to small Pinscher dogs. The Farm Dog served many purposes over the years including killing vermin, guarding livestock and providing companionship to its human family.

The Danish-Swedish farm dog is small-sized compact dog breed with rectangular proportions (deep chest and a triangular head). Its ears are triangular and fold forward. The Danish-Swedish Farmdog has a short, dense coat. The Danish-Swedish Farm dog is easy to groom and sheds little. A fully grown Farm Dog can weigh between 15 and 25 pounds. This is a smooth-coated dog that is primarily white with patches of black, brown, chocolate or red. However, tri-colors are acceptable as well. The head of the Farm Dog is triangular, and the nose is black. The eyes should be bright and can be light or dark brown. The ears of the Danish-Swedish Farmdog are rounded and flop forward towards the face. While most of these dogs have a long tail that is held up and slightly curved, some of them are born with bobtails. Docking of the tail is unacceptable. This is a compact little dog with muscular legs and a solid body.

Personality

The Danish-Swedish farm dog is active, energetic and lively. They make great family dogs, but as they were bred for herding, they may try to herd children. They need consistent training and require a lot of exercise. As they were bred as working dogs, they are happiest when they have a task or a job to do. They are usually not aggressive towards other dogs or strangers. Danish-Swedish Farmdogs are playful little dogs that love attention. They can also be extremely curious and a bit mischievous at times. They get along great with other dogs and children; however, they do not interact well with such pets as rodents, birds and rabbits. While they are quite intelligent, some of them can be stubborn.

Appearance

The Danish-Swedish Farmdog does not require any special type of grooming other than an occasional brushing with a hound glove. You will only need to bathe your pet a couple of times a month unless it gets particularly dirty. If you need to clean its ears, do not use a cotton swab. Instead, use a damp rag to wipe out any excess wax. From time to time, you will need to clip your pet's nails. If you choose to do it yourself, the best type of nail clipper to use on a small dog is a guillotine-style model. When clipping the nails, trim just the tip taking care to avoid the tiny veins that can be found in the center of each nail.
