The pit bull has a horrible reputation… but are they really as bad as people think? Many renters experience problems if they have a pit bull as they are not generally permitted in rented houses. Why is this? This may be due to that particular landlord not preferring that breed due to its “dangerous” reputation. This is also due to the fact that if a pit is in the home, the homeowners insurance is generally much more expensive.
The Fighting Pit Bull
The Pit has a negative reputation because they are the breed most often preferred for dog fighting rings. Why is this? Of course, they are extremely powerful dogs. Not only are they muscular but they also have extremely strong jaws. This makes them the preferred dog breed for this “sport.” Are all pit bulls like this, though?
The Family Dog
Just as all dog breeds, there are some pit bulls which are good with children and some which are not. For the most part though, pit bulls are known to be extremely affectionate and actually the best dogs to be around children. Almost all dogs have a desire to please their owner; however, the pit bull has an extreme desire to do so. The pit bull literally craves attention and praise from their owner which is one of the many reasons they are excellent within a family environment! On the Other Side
We just discussed that the pit bull will literally do anything to make his or her owner happy. This is also why they are associated with a poor reputation. If their owner would like them to fight or be aggressive, they will also do this to please their owner. All in all, the pit bull’s temperament is entirely based on his environment!
Liability Insurance
Due to their poor reputation, owners of rental properties often do not allow the pit bull or if they do, require liability insurance to be purchased. Homeowners insurance sometimes will not cover this breed which makes liability insurance that much more important. Liability insurance will cover items in case an incident was to occur. There are several breeds included in this assumption including the German Shepherd, Rottweiler and Doberman.
