How Much Does Pet Insurance Cost?

The answer to this question is not a simple answer. Like most insurance, pet insurance has many factors that can make your premium higher or lower. At PetPremium, we want to offer a range of pet insurance products to fit everyone’s budget.

How much does Pet Insurance cost?

Pet Insurance Cost and Coverage

Here is a list of the factors that affect the pet insurance cost of PetPremium pet insurance premiums:

When reviewing insurance for your cat versus your dog, you will notice that our prices are cheaper for cats versus dogs.

Cat and Dog Breeds
Just like species, we do rate different breeds differently. Visit our dog breeds and cat breeds library for more breed specific information. The pet insurance costs for some breeds are higher then for other breeds.

Your Location
Your pet insurance premium is based on your location. When you live in New York pet insurance costs will be probably higher than when you live in Kentucky for example.

Select your Deductible
At PetPremium, we allow you to select your own deductible to help customize your plan. A higher deductible will decrease your premium, while a lower deductible can increase your premium.

Policyholders that accept a lower co-insurance percentage will pay more out of pocket but will pay less in their annual premium. That is why we let you choose the co-insurance percentage for your plan.

So when looking at PetPremium’s pet insurance premium keep in mind the above mentioned factors. Our Pet Health Center allows you to research information on your cat’s or dog’s specific breed. Waiting periods apply for illnesses (14 days), and ligament and knee conditions such as Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) (12 months).

How to File a Pet Insurance Claim

How to File a Pet Insurance Claim

When your pet is injured or sick, the last thing you want to worry about is filling out a complicated claim form with complicated procedures. At PetPremium, we made filing a claim easy as 1-2-3!

Step 1- Get a Pet Insurance Claim Form

We can mail you a claim form, fax a claim form to you or you can download a claim form anytime by clicking here. Our online claim form is in PDF, so you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open it.

Step 2 – Complete the Pet Insurance Claim Form

Our claim form is easy to understand and is divided into 3 simple parts:

  • Part 1: General Information – This section helps us to identify you and the pet that you are filing the claim about.
  • Part 2: Diagnosis/Symptom Information – This part of the claim form is extremely crucial since it tells us why you are filing the claim.
  • Part 3: Pet Owner Declaration – After reading the declaration on the claim form, we need your signature to process your claim.

Step 3 – Submit Your Claim

Just click here to instantly download our PetPremium’s Claim form.

Completed claims forms can be faxed, mailed or emailed to us along with an itemized invoice to the contact information listed on your claim form. Please choose only one method to submit your claims, as duplicate claims submissions can delay claim processing.

Once you have submitted your claims, do not forget that you can track the status of your claim online 24/7 at PetPremium’s Member Center. We will notify you via email upon receipt of your claim, if we need more information to process it, and when your claim has been finalized.

About Pet Insurance

What is pet insurance?
Pet insurance helps you afford quality veterinary and prescription care, to help you avoid a tough decision between your pet’s well-being and your personal finances.
Why do I need pet insurance?
The costs of veterinary care are rising rapidly each year, especially as more treatment options become available for your pet. With our pet health insurance, you’ll have financial support to help you give your pets the best care possible depending on the type of coverage you elect to select for your pet.
What does pet insurance cover?
Pet insurance typically protects pets in case of certain accidents or illnesses. We believe preventive care is important to help keep your pet happy, healthy, and protected. We have two pet insurance plans, Accident-Only and TOTAL COVERAGESM, to fit your needs and budget. Explore PetPremium’s coverage plans to see the preventive care options available for you at an additional cost.
What does it cost?
We work hard to make our pet insurance as affordable as possible with monthly, quarterly, semi-annually and annually payment options. Your cost will depend on factors like the level of coverage you choose, the breed and age of your pet. To find out what your pet insurance premium would be, get a free quote today.
Once I’ve enrolled, how long before my pet insurance is effective?
Your accident coverage, and Preventive Care coverage, if selected, will begin on your plan’s effective date, except for ligament issues and knee conditions, which will be covered 14 days after your effective date. Illnesses coverage, if selected, also will start 14 days after your effective date. (Please note that all plans are subject to underwriting and are not issued without receipt of payment.)
What are my payment options?
Payments may be made by credit card or automatic check withdrawal. We accept payments on an annual, semiannual, quarterly or monthly basis. You can change your payment method easily anytime at our free Member Center.
Can I save money by paying annually?
Yes. We’ll waive our low installment fee if you pay your 12-month plan in full. This fee is not applicable in all states.
Can I stay with my veterinarian?
Yes! We wouldn’t want you to have to change veterinarians. We have made it extremely easy with our pet insurance, you can use any licensed veterinarian in the United States or Canada. This way, your pet is even covered if you’re travelling.
How do I submit a pet insurance claim?
It’s easy! All you have to do is fill out our 1-page claim form, then fax, mail, or email it to us with your receipts. Just make sure you sign the form. To make it even easier, we don’t require your veterinarian to fill out any part of the form or sign it. Click here to learn more or download the form.

Using Your Plan

How long does it take to get reimbursed?
We work hard to process our pet insurance claims as quickly as possible. It’s our policy to reimburse you within at least 30 days from receipt of all required information. Remember sometimes it is necessary to contact your veterinarian to obtain additional information or clarify procedures or treatment plans that are recommended. You can track the status of your claims easily online at our Member Center.
How does the deductible work?
Our pet insurance has the option for you to choose the deductible that fits your economic situation. We have deductibles for as low as a $100 annual deductible per pet, or $250 or $500. Our deductibles only need to be met once per policy period, no matter how many incidents that occur. This is different from per incident deductibles that require you to pay a new deductible for every single injury or illness, which can really add up.
Can my claim be paid directly to the veterinarian?
Yes. Simply check the box on the front of the claim form, and we’ll send the reimbursement directly to the veterinary clinic. You may want to check with your veterinarian to see if they will wait for a portion of their payment if you indicate payment should be mailed directly to them.
Can I make changes to my plan?
Yes. You may be eligible to change your plan and coverage. Call us at 1-800-935-7280 for details.
Do you cover ligament and knee conditions such as Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL), Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL), Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL), Medial Patella Luxation (MPL) or meniscal damage conditions?
Costs associated with the diagnosis, treatment, or surgery for ligament or knee injuries that occur during the first 14 days of the policy period after enrollment, are not covered. If the condition is pre-existing to the policy effective date, these conditions will also not be covered.
Do you provide pet insurance for residents of Canada?
We don’t offer pet insurance coverage in Canada at this time. However, if you live in the US and travel to Canada, you can take your pet to any licensed veterinarian there for treatment. You would submit your claim the same way as if you saw a veterinarian in the United States.
Can I cancel my pet insurance at any time?
We’re sure you’ll be happy with our coverage and service, but you can cancel at any time by contacting us. We also have a 30-day money back guarantee as long as no claims are covered. This is sometimes referred to as a free look period as well. Just call us at 1-800-935-7280 to cancel within the first 30 days, and we’ll refund your money using the payment method you provided.
What’s not covered?
Both of our plans have exclusions. For a full list please see a sample plan. See the exclusions that apply to your available plans.
What happens at renewal?
To make it as easy as possible for you to maintain your coverage without interruption, we automatically renew your pet insurance plan each year. Keep in mind that your annual deductible and annual limit reset at that time.
Can I receive information by email rather than mail?
Yes! You can choose to receive your plan and other available communications online at the Member Center or by email, rather than by mail. We suggest going paperless because it saves time, effort, and the environment! Just select our “Send policy and documents to my email” during enrollment. Please know that even if you do not elect to go paperless we may send you valuable information and offers to your email address. If you’re already a customer, you can login to Member Center and then click “Go Paperless.” Please know that even if you do not elect to “Go Paperless,” we may send you valuable information and offers to your email address. For more information visit our Help Center and learn more about My Account.

3. About Your Pet

What are the age requirements for your pet insurance?
For initial enrollment in our pet insurance, dogs and cats must be at least 8 weeks old.
Will my pet insurance be cancelled when my pets get older?
We’ll never cancel your pet insurance because of the age of your pet. However, your premium will adjust as your pet ages. You may choose to change your coverage as your pet ages as well.
What if I have more than one pet?
If you have more than one pet, you can save 10% on the premium for each additional pet, after the pet with the highest premium.
What are pre-existing conditions?
Pre-existing conditions are conditions that show symptoms prior to a plan’s effective or within a waiting period. This includes conditions that have not yet been clearly diagnosed or treated with medication. You can read more here.
Are pre-existing conditions covered?
We don’t cover pre-existing conditions to keep premiums lower. If a pre-existing condition is curable and 180 days have passed since its cure and last treatment, it may become eligible for coverage.
Do you offer preventive care options for routine veterinarian visits?
Pet insurance typically protects pets in case of accidents or illnesses. Because Preventive Care is so important to keep your pet happy and healthy, we have three options for this care, which includes vaccinations and check-ups, which you can add for a low cost. We have two pet health insurance plans to fit your needs and budget. Explore PetPremium’s Optional Preventive Care coverage to see the options available for you for more details.
What does congenital and or hereditary mean?
A congenital condition is one that is considered a birth defect or a defect in growth development. A hereditary condition is one that may have been passed down from an animal’s parents or through the breed. Both congenital and hereditary conditions can show symptoms at any time during a pet’s life. Explore PetPremium’s coverage for more details about options available to you.
*Pre-existing conditions are not covered. Waiting periods, annual deductible, co-insurance, benefit limits and exclusions may apply. For all terms and conditions visit our resources page. Preventive Care reimbursements are based on a schedule. Products and rates may vary and are subject to change. Plans are underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company and administered by C&F Insurance Agency, Inc., a Crum & Forster company.
