The Most Popular Terrier Breeds

Terrier breeds are best known for their feisty temperaments and energetic nature. Not only are they popular among people who lead active lifestyles, but since most terrier dogs do not shed much ( hypoallergenic dog breeds ), they are quite popular among individuals with allergies as well. While there are many terriers to choose from, you will find five of the most popular ones described below.

The Most Popular Terrier Breeds

American Staffordshire Terriers

American Staffordshire Terriers are some of the calmest terrier types ; however, they are still quite active and require a lot of exercise. These are short-haired, medium-sized dogs that can weigh anywhere between 57 and 67 pounds. While Amstaffs are quite gentle and loyal with their human family members, they are very distrusting of strangers and will become aggressive if necessary.

Jack Russell Terriers

Jack Russell Terriers are perhaps the most lively terrier types, but they are also some of the most popular. These are small dogs that can have a short or rough coat, and they average about 11 to 18 pounds fully grown. Jack Russells are extremely intelligent and enjoy performing tricks. They are also very sturdy and gentle with kids. However, they do not always interact well with such pets as cats, rabbits and rodents.

Airedale Terriers

Another popular terrier breed is the Airedale Terrier. This is a wire-haired, medium-sized dog that can weigh between 40 and 65 pounds when fully grown. Airedales are comical dogs that love to be silly and play games. However, they do have a serious side as well, and many of them have even excelled in such arenas as police work, military work, obedience, tracking, agility and therapy work.

Scottish Terriers

Scottish Terriers have been favorite terrier dogs since about the 17th century. These are small wire-haired dogs that average about 18 to 22 pounds as adults. While the most common color for Scotties is black, some are wheaten or brindle. Scotties are fearless, feisty terriers that love their humans, but they can be extremely wary of strangers.

Miniature Schnauzers

Miniature Schnauzers are small, wire-haired dogs that can weigh anywhere from 10 to 18 pounds. These dogs have been popular terrier types since about the late 19th century. Miniature Schnauzers are alert, highly spirited dogs that love their owners but are aloof with strangers. While they can be a bit stubborn at times, they are extremely intelligent and learn rather quickly.

If you are amused with the feisty temperament of terrier breeds, one of the breeds described above may be perfect for your home! However, these are just a few of the popular terrier dogs you can choose from. Other great terriers are listed below:
